So if you haven’t read part one in this series, I would strongly suggest that you go and read it prior to reading this particular blog. To recap, recently a group of God fearing men and women have joined together to make a declaration of the beliefs on the subject of sexuality. This may seem like something that is unnecessary to some, but in this day in age, there are professing believers and non believers alike who are joining in with those who openly practice sexual immoral acts and making the erroneous declaration that God is pleased with it. Being that there is such a blending of the false doctrine, making such a declaration is an act of drawing a line in the sand and saying “As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15″). It clarifies to the believers who may be unaware the biblical stance on such matters. Tonight, we are going to explore the first four Articles of this declaration.
WE AFFIRM that God has designed marriage to be a covenantal, sexual, procreative, lifelong union of one man and one woman, as husband and wife, and is meant to signify the covenant love between Christ and his bride the church. WE DENY that God has designed marriage to be a homosexual, polygamous, or polyamorous relationship. We also deny that marriage is a mere human contract rather than a covenant made before God.
I believe that this is very self explanatory. While in America it is now legal in the court of law for same sex individuals to be married, this is drawing a clear separation of the beliefs of the world vs. the belief of the church. The church is declaring that they are standing on the foundation of the word of God. That is the covenant that He created in Genesis between man and woman. This goes on to say that they are not standing on the side of polygamy or polyamorous (relationship with multiple partners who know about all partners and are content). I personally believe that this article is a great opening as it sets the foundation of our basic beliefs right up front. This is really standing up to the false doctrines and putting them to bed right away.
WE AFFIRM that God’s revealed will for all people is chastity outside of marriage and fidelity within marriage. WE DENY that any affections, desires, or commitments ever justify sexual intercourse before or outside marriage; nor do they justify any form of sexual immorality.
This article is good for the single Christians. Many times when I talk to people, they are saying that many times the church condemns those who have alternative lifestyles. However, they point out the fact that many are in the church and are heterosexual but are sexually active outside of marriage. These people are absolutely right. In acknowledging the fact that God does not accept premarital sex, it signifies that we are aware of the problem with fornication in heterosexuals and doesn’t make excuses for them.
WE AFFIRM that God created Adam and Eve, the first human beings, in his own image, equal before God as persons, and distinct as male and female. WE DENY that the divinely ordained differences between male and female render them unequal in dignity or worth.
This article is wonderful in that it denies the falsehood of men being more important than women. There are many religions out there that deem the man as the superior to the woman. In even some Christians sects, the followers are taught that women are to obey their man and that they are lesser and not equal to the man. This sometimes can lead to abuse of the perceived power and degrades women, which is not in God’s original design. This declaration is so beautiful. It really debunks every sect that misinterprets the fact that Eve was made from women.
WE AFFIRM that divinely ordained differences between male and female reflect God’s original creation design and are meant for human good and human flourishing. WE DENY that such differences are a result of the Fall or are a tragedy to be overcome
This clarifies that the original design that God created are not punishment to anyone, though there may be many who feel that they are trapped in their sexual identity. This is really a clarification that should provide hope in those who are lost in this sin. Although they may feel like it is punishment and that they are suffering because of the gender that they were born, God had a plan in it all.
